Functional Depression?

KayUncategorized1 Comment

Hello, my name is Kay. I have always suffered with depression and anxiety, but since graduating college and starting in my career I have had these spread out and random bouts of depression. For the most part I’m content, going through life as a “normal” person would, but then I’ll wake up one day and I just cannot bring myself to do anything….especially go to work. My last episode was at the end of June and since then I’ve been doing okay until Monday of this week. I woke up and I just could not bring myself to do anything. There was no motivation, no drive. I just cannot bring myself to get dressed and go to work. Especially because in my field of work, I am spending long hours taking care of other people. My friend thinks I have functional depression….is that a thing? Does anyone else have their depression come and go in episodes? I’m not sure how to fix it because I can’t pinpoint when a next episode will occur.

  1. Hi kay, I heard about functioning depression, but im unsure if thats an actual medical term. I do go through bouts of depression like that. Ill go a couple of weeks being fine and then a week of what you described. I would suggest to talk to your doctor, even if its a general doctor. My sister gets her depression treated through her general doctor. She hasn’t seen a psychiatrist or anything like that, but if you can afford/manage to go to one, i think you should. They’ll be more accurate in diagnosing you and helping you adjust medications (if they prescribe anything) and help you in ways a regular doctor would.

I hope you get the help you need and deserve, I’ll keep you in my thoughts.
