Depression can feel like a dark cloud over our heads or a heavy weight on our chests. Sometimes it feels like there aren’t any words to explain what we’re feeling. What helps you express yourself when you’re feeling depressed?

As an introvert my natural inclination, depressed or otherwise, is to retreat into myself. When feeling depressed most of the time the last thing I want to do is communicate with others. It seems I have to force myself into a frame of mind which will allow me to share.
However, I will gladly sit with a good psychotherapist and share every and any feeling that might come up. While I’ve known others who view therapy as something to fear I’ve always seen it as a means by which I can feel human once again. Who better to spill your guts to than a professional, highly qualified and objective mental health provider? My current therapist is wonderful and has helped me immensely. In fact, I’m not sure where I’d be right now if not for her.
As a musician I’ll often pull out my baroque lute or guitar and lose myself in music whenever I feel my back is against the wall . Doing so allows me to open a door into another world in order to escape the present. It’s an enjoyable way for me to obtain a measure of meaningful peace, at least in the moment, and, at the same time, carries no ill effects healthwise.
